Australian Open 2014: 4 Must-See First Round Matches

4. Gilles Simon (Fra)(18) vs Daniel Brands (Ger)

Tennis AussieThis probably won't be one to make the headlines but then not much will after the opening round of a slam. This should, however, prove to be a fairly competitive match and provide some brilliant highlights and what more can we ask for from tennis coverage. Daniel Brands is probably one of the most unlucky people in tennis. Time after time, he has come up against tough opponents early on in slams and important tournaments. Most famously, he took a set off Nadal last season in the French Open. He took the second set to a tie break and, although he eventually got overpowered, Nadal was quoted as saying 'I don't know what he's ranked but he can't be ranked 60th playing like that. I can't believe it'. High praise indeed from the King of Clay. So it seems reasonable to suggest that there is a great talent somewhere in this guy and the start of a new season might be enough to ignite some fresh ambition. He could surely put up a good fight against 18th seed Gilles Simon. He has beaten him before, although is trailing their head to head 2-1. Simon had a fairly predictable 2013 season, making it to the fourth round of two majors before going out reluctantly to top seeds, Andy Murray and Roger Federer. He's clearly having a good start to 2014. This year, he has already beaten Wawrinka which will have been a great achievement for him as Wawrinka is also enjoying great success in his career. Brands has already beaten David Ferrer and Nikolai Davydenko this year, both more difficult opponents than the Frenchman. Can he cause a minor upset here and knock out the 18th seed to make it to the second round where he could potentially go up against Cilic or Granollers? Whoever comes out the victor of this match could be set to make the second week. It's a tough one to call which suggests this could be a hard fought match and one definitely worth watching.
