Britain's 50 Greatest Sports Personalities Of 2012

26. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0DY0Q2YkOos Sport - Football Predictably, the England football team failed to make much of an impact at the European Championship, despite a promising start to the tournament that saw victories over Sweden and the Ukraine, as well as draw with much-fancied France. A surprise addition to the team was eighteen year old Arsenal winger Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who despite having only made his first Premier League start in January, and never having made a senior appearance for the national side before, was rightfully rewarded for his fine first season with the Gunners. His performances in his nine appearances for his country so far have put underperforming regulars such as James Milner and Ashley Young to shame, with the youngster having already scored his first international goal whilst continuing to impress at Arsenal under the tutelage of Arsene Wenger, who for all the flack that he takes, has an unquestionable knack for nurturing promising young talent. Part of a new generation that will carry the hopes of a nation for the next decade or so, Oxlade-Chamberlain, alongside players such as Raheem Sterling, Kyle Walker and Tom Cleverley, has the potential to do what the €˜golden generation€™ of Gerrard, Lampard, Terry and company could never do €“ bring a major trophy back to football€™s home for the first time since 1966.

25. Peter Wilson

Step forward Peter Wilson, a specialist in the double trap, an event that sees competitors shoot at clay discs with a shotgun. After seeing his funding removed completely following a lack of British success in the Beijing Olympics, the future looked bleak for the twenty-six year old. Through the assistance of 2004 gold medalist Sheikh Al Matoum of Dubai, however, he continued his training. This paid off in 2012, which saw Wilson a new double trap world record when he scored 198 out of a possible 200 points in an event in Arizona, before he earned one of Britain€™s first gold medals in the Olympics with another stellar performance. This was the country€™s first medal in shooting since 2000, and ensures that it will no longer go ignored by funding bodies.
