Britain's 50 Greatest Sports Personalities Of 2012

28. Jade Jones

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qriu66KJo8w Sport - Taekwondo 2008 saw Britain win its first medal in the Korean martial art of taekwondo, as Sarah Stevenson took home a bronze, though this time around she was defeated in the first round. The hopes of a nation then fell to young Welshwoman Jade Jones after controversy had eclipsed the selection process for the country€™s male competitor in the -80kg discipline, as world number one Aaron Cook was overlooked in favour of the much lower-ranked Lutalo Muhammad, though he eventually answered his critics with a bronze medal winning performance. Aged seventeen at the time, Jones was the Olympic youth champion for the -55kg category in 2010, whilst as a professional, she won a bronze medal in the sport€™s World Championships in the run-up to the games. This medal became gold in the Olympics, however, after a series of dominant performances saw the now-nineteen year-old defeat Taiwanese top seed Tseng Li-Cheng in the semi finals and then Chinese second seed Hou Yuzhou, in the final, becoming one of the nation€™s youngest medallists with a bright future still ahead of her.

27. Nick Matthew

Whilst it could be considered more worthy of inclusion than events such as synchronised swimming, the fast-paced game was turned down for addition to the Rio 2016 schedule in favour of rugby sevens and golf, which will fill the spots vacated by the removal of baseball and softball from the programme. Nevertheless, Britain boasts two of the finest professionals in the modern game in the form of James Willstrop and Nick Matthew, who have yo-yoed between number one and number two in the official world rankings between them for the last two years. Matthew, born and raised in Sheffield, took the number one spot in January by beating Willstrop in the Tournament Of Champions, before winning the British Open for the third time, becoming the first Englishman to win the title first since the sport went professional. The reigning World Games and Commonwealth Games champion, Matthew currently sits behind Willstrop once again in the rankings, which could easily change once again as the two continue to eclipse their nearest rivals following years of Egyptian dominance in the game.
