Following the 1955 triumph, Chelsea slumped in to mid-table mediocrity, but they got themselves back to the top in the late sixties and early seventies. They had several near misses in the league, but they beat Leeds in the 1970 FA Cup final, and then Real Madrid in the Cup Winners Cup final the year after. Building on that, the club decided to move forward by renovating Stamford Bridge, to remove the running track and bring the stands closer to the pitch. They only managed to work on the East Stand, before problems with suppliers and builders sent the project way over budget. In the end, the club sold off their star talent, including Peter Osgood, to repay the debts. They ended up losing the freehold to their stadium during this period to a property developer. They were close to becoming homeless, and had to wait years to own their stadium again, finally winning a legal battle for the freehold in the early nineties.
