Chelsea: 10 Most Costly Mistakes In Blues History

10. Passing Up The European Cup

Back in 1955 things were going quite well for Chelsea, as manager Ted Drake had just lead them to their first ever English Championship. That was the same year that the first ever European Champions Cup was to take place, and they were invited to join. The Blues turned down the invitation after pressure from the Football League and the FA. They felt that this new tournament would be little more than a distraction, so they urged their champions to avoid it. Whoever would have thought matches between the best teams in Europe would have been popular? In the end, the first European Cup was won by some team named Real Madrid, and what have they ever done since? There€™s no way of saying how well Chelsea would have done if they€™d entered, but passing up the chance of being England€™s first side to play in the European Cup certainly wasn€™t a great decision.
