Despite detailing the greatest World Cup winning sides in this list, it must be recognised that often the ‘best team’ doesn’t win the tournament. Great Netherlands and Hungarian sides have come up short in the past despite their unquestionable excellence. That is perhaps the beauty of the World Cup. Anyone can make a name for themselves.

That, however, was not the case with France in 2018. Whilst perhaps not clear favourites going into the tournament, France after a rocky Group Stage, quickly went about establishing themselves as clearly the best side in Russia.

With a perfect blend of youth and experience, the stage was set for Kylian Mbappé to show the world his prodigious talent, intelligent movement and electric place. And with Pogba and Griezmann adding quality and guile, Giroud doing a high quality imitation of Stéphane Guivarc’h and N’Golo Kanté intelligently running the midfield engine room, France were perfectly calibrated and subsequently too much for a promising Croatia side in the final.

This France team would certainly be a match for the team of '98. Which is perhaps the greatest compliment that they can be paid.
