Every UEFA Champions League Final Ranked From Worst To Best

12. Manchester United 1-1 Chelsea (2008)

Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium played host to the Champions League’s first ever all-English final and one of the most dramatic penalty shootout conclusions in the history of the competition.

United drew first blood through the in-form Cristiano Ronaldo, who gave the Red Devils the lead with a towering header on 26 minutes.

Chelsea had finished just two points behind Manchester United in the Premier League that season and there was little to separate them here, with Frank Lampard levelling the scores just before half-time.

While the second-half passed by without incident, the game sprang into life during extra time, with John Terry clearing a Ryan Giggs shot off the line and Chelsea twice hitting the woodwork.

A major flashpoint came during the second period with a 22-man melée that ended with a red card for Didier Drogba after a slap on Nemanja Vidic.

It was on to penalties from there where it initially looked like Ronaldo would end up the villain of the piece after his spot kick was saved by Petr Čech.

That handed John Terry the chance to secure the Blues’ first ever European Cup with the fifth and final penalty but he missing in comical fashion, after losing his footing in the run up.

Terry’s misery and most neutral’s amusement was then confirmed when Nicolas Anelka’s tame effort was saved by Edwin van der Sar.

Though it was forgettable for large spells, the dramatic, narrative-laden finale ensured the 2008 final is better remembered than most.
