Formula 1 2013 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix – Sebastian Vettel Dominates In Desert

Qualifying

Mark Webber flew to a fantastic pole position, edging out his teammate by over a tenth of a second. Webber pulled out a great lap to take his 13th career pole and looked forward to the race. Vettel felt he could have done better but still took a comfortable second place. Mercedes wrapped up a solid second row with Rosberg in third and Hamilton fourth, giving them a promising position for the championship battle. Rosberg felt Red Bull were out of reach despite a small mistake while Hamilton suffered rear suspension failure that spun him on his second, faster hot lap, though he was happy to be ahead of Ferrari. Lotus looked strong as Kimi Raikkonen took fifth place, only to be disqualified for failing a floor deflection test that meant he started from the back of the grid. Grosjean came in seventh (sixth after penalties) and was a bit disappointed, feeling the car was faster than that and felt different in the evening session, leaving them with work to do as they targeted the podium. Sauber had another good day as Hulkenberg seized sixth place (fifth after penalty) on what he called a perfect lap, feeling he could make the top ten. Gutierrez struggled with traffic and finished P17 (P16 after penalties), eliminated in Q1, running out of time to start his final flying lap. Ferrari had another lacklustre qualifying, with Massa out-qualifying Alonso for the fifth time in six races to take eighth (seventh after penalties) as Alonso failed to make Q3, ending up P11 (P10 after penalties). Massa was pleased with the result and had though he might not make Q3, but the dropping temperatures and a good lap helped him. Alonso was disappointed to not make Q3 and targeted a perfect race for points. McLaren cracked the top ten with Perez on his way to ninth place (eighth after penalties) as he enjoyed the car and felt they might have got higher with a tiny bit more. Button only finished P13 however (P12 after penalties) as he struggled to get the tyres working and with balance, frustrating him after running sixth in FP3. Torro Rosso broke into Q3 again as Ricciardo went tenth (ninth after penalties), pleasing him after a difficult practice. Vergne felt he could have done better than P14 (P13 after penalties) but locked up heavily in Q2, costing him time he'd made up, but felt race pace would be alright. Force India took P12 with Di Resta (P11 after penalties) and P18 (P17 after penalties); Di Resta was reasonably satisfied and felt they could challenge for points, while Sutil struggled with the car and felt they hadn't worked out issues he had from practice. Williams failed to better those ahead as Maldonado was P15 (P14 after penalties) and Bottas P16 (P15 after penalties). Maldonado struggled with traffic and failed to get a clean lap, while Bottas felt they might have challenge for Q3 instead of finishing bottom of Q2. Caterham mixed it with Marussia again as Van der Garde took P19 (P18 after penalties) with a mixture of handling issues, and Pic P21 (P19 after penalties) as he struggled with balance following overnight changes to the setup. Bianchi got between the two Caterham's with P20 (P21 after penalties) with a good lap, but a five-place gearbox penalty dropped him to P21 ahead of Raikkonen's penalised Lotus. Chilton had a DRS issue and then struggled with tyres for his final fast lap, meaning he couldn't match his teammate.
