The Tail End
At the back, Marussia took the day as Bianchi grabbed P17 for them on their way to tenth in the constructors' title to hold off Caterham and earn themselves millions of dollars for next season. Bianchi made a good start but then started to struggle with tyres and meant he lost position to the Caterham of Van der Garde, but he kept his head and ran better on the harder tyres. Van der Garde was later penalised for ignoring blue flags, giving him a run to the finish to win the battle of the tail end. Max Chilton finished P19 and found it tricky as they ran in the dry after a whole weekend in the wet. The balance was difficult and he found the middle stint tense with the threat of rain, and then in the final stint suffered heavy vibration on his front left that saw them make a late pit stop for fresh tyres. It meant he saw the chequered flag, securing him the record of not only being the only driver of 2013 to finish every race, but also the first ever rookie driver to finish every race of his debut season - an incredible 19 finishes from 19 races. Despite the better pace, Caterham were unable to seize tenth in the constructors' from Marussia as they did so dramatically last year. Van der Garde chased down Bianchi early on and then was pushing onto Kovalainen in the Lotus, up to P14 before pitting. His second set of tyres didn't have the same grip and he was ordered to let Pic past in the interests of the team, and he struggled with a long stint as they tried to guess the weather. A final run on the harder tyre was looking sufficient to beat Marussia until he got a drive-through penalty for ignoring blue flags, meaning he finished around seven seconds behind Bianchi. Pic raced with his teammate well through the race and was allowed to pass him as they chased the P13 result required to topple Marussia. His tyres held up well through the second stint and his lap times were close to the midfield runners, but in his final stint the rear suspension failed on lap 58, taking him out of the race for a disappointing end to 2013.
