Holland U21 1-2 Scotland U21 - Match Report

A great win and great display by William Stark's men, Holland will feel a little hard done by as they were on home soil and maybe should've took more of their chances

Holland took on Scotland in a crucial under 21 qualifying match as both sides hope to qualify for the 2013 under 21 Championships which will be held in Israel. Holland topped the group on nine points, before heading into this clash, whilst the Scots sat in third. Scotland started the match very brightly as Celtic winger Jamie Forrest used his pace to create a yard of space down the right wing and delivered a loopy cross to in-form Huddersfield striker Jordan Rhodes, who made his senior debut for Scotland against Cyprus a couple of days ago, and Rhodes neatly headed his effort into the back of the Holland net on the 2nd minute mark. A perfect start for the visitors. On 6 minutes Baratize, the former Arsenal forward, had a close range effort blocked by Mark Ridgers in the Scotland goal. The Scots kept possession well in the first ten minutes and made Holland work hard. Five minutes later and Holland equalise, rather controversially, though. Speedy and lively winger Maher whipped in a inviting ball but it ended up in Ridgers hands, the usual second choice goalkeeper let go and unfortunatley, for the Scots, the ball did cross the line and the home team were awarded the goal. Carig Whyte impressed on the left wing, creating several chances for Jordan Rhodes but the forward couldn't convert any of them. Liverpool centre-back Danny Wilson kept tabs on Nicola Baratize well and it ended 1-1 at the break. Holland started the second period very well, Ola John, who was a danger throughout, beat Scotland full-back Ryan Jack and delivered a cross for Meher who could not find the target. Scotland broke the deadlock on 54 minutes as Jack Ryan, the Aberdeen defender, went on a mazy run down the right flank and set Wotherspoon off who drilled his effort past Bizot to send the Scottish on their way to eight points and into second spot. The game from then on was rather poor with both sides failing to create or produce many opportunities. Even the most lively of individuals Ola John was finding it difficult as he looked tired late on in the second half, along with the 21 other players on the field. A great win and great display by William Stark's men, Holland will feel a little hard done by as they were on home soil and maybe should've took more of their chances. Scotland move up to second place with this win, Holland remain top but end their unbeaten run. Man of the Match: Jordan Rhodes.
