Joe Calzaghe's 5 Most Career Defining Victories

3. Mikkel Kessler (03/11/2007)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WKK6BGQ4w_Q By November 2007, Calzaghe was still the WBO and RING super middleweight champion, having relinquished the IBF title. There was a new kid on the block, Denmark's Mikkel Kessler, who had won the WBA and WBC versions of the world championship. The 'Viking Warrior', Kessler, was now Calzaghe's biggest challenger in the division. The bout would stay place under the closed roof of Cardiff's Millennium Stadium in front 50,000 fans. The then-29-year-old, undefeated Kessler, who'd knocked out 29 of his previous 39 opponents, was predicted to give Calzaghe a really good run for his money and possible an even defeat a then 36 Calzaghe. After a close opening four rounds, Calzaghe then upped his workrate as he marched his way to winning the majority of the remaining eight rounds. Whilst Kessler landed the more powerful shots, it was Calzaghe's volume of over 1000 punches thrown that did the damage. This earned scores of 117-111, 116-112 and 116-112 in Calzaghe's favour to record another unanimous decision victory. Calzaghe now held the WBO, WBA, WBC and RING super middleweight titles, and having previously held the IBF title, he'd won every major title in the division. This left no doubt that he was the undisputed king of the division.
