Liverpool Transfer News: Toby Alderweireld Plays Down Anfield Talk

Alderwield Ajax defender Toby Alderweireld has dismissed speculation that he is interested in a move to Liverpool in the summer, but will keep his options open, according to Sky Sports. The 24-year old was quoted in Belgian media last month as saying Liverpool "meets my criteria" but he has since claimed reports linking him with a move to Anfield are wide of the mark. Speaking to Dutch newspaper Metro, he said:
"I have also read that Liverpool would be interested. "I never said Liverpool would be my next club. Nothing is true about that."
Ajax are set to lose most of their star players in the summer with Siem de Jong and Christian Eriksen both set to move on in the summer, but Alderweireld insists the Dutch Giants are still very much part of his plans when it comes to assessing his options in the summer.
"Ajax is in every way a fantastic club. We play for prizes every year and we also show good things on a regular basis in Europe. "After the season I will look at my options. Possibly, I even stay at Ajax."
Liverpool are looking for a new centre back in the summer with club legend Jamie Carragher set to retire from the game at the end of the season. Alderweireld, who can also play at right back, could also be an alternative to Glen Johnson. Alderweireld has spent his entire senior career at Ajax and broke into the senior team in 2008 after emerging from the club's famed youth academy, having first played for Dutch side Germinal Beerschot during his formative years.
