Newcastle United Transfers: 5 Alternative Players Pardew Must Sign

2. Ashley Williams

As chance would have it, while writing this article - SkySports are reporting that Newcastle United are indeed interested in signing Swansea CB Ashley Williams. I for one, approve. Williams is a strong CB but with that, he can play ball. For a guy his size, of his strength, he's not a 'hoofer' so to speak. He'll find a pass when needs be, is comfortable with the ball at his feet and if you noticed; he started a lot of moves for Swansea last season by distributing it to Leon Britton from the back. The same assistance unfortunately, wasn't offered by the likes of Mike Williamson. The only problem with this is the fact he's 27 years of age, and will be 28 when the Premier League campaign kicks off. This might be where any potential deal is scuppered. Mike Ashley isn't likely to want to spend any cash on someone who isn't likely to improve, nor gain value as the years progress. While he is a suitable candidate, his age, and price tag might be a bit off putting. I can only imagine that a fee would be close to £7m at least, but either way - he's worth having as a standby target!
