4. Arsene Wenger

The Premier League’s current longest-reigning manager is our list’s least likely appointment, but it’s not completely outwith the realm of possibility. The FA have reportedly always coveted Arsene Wenger, and the Frenchman’s Arsenal contract is set to expire at the end of the season. It’d likely take an extended caretaker spell from Southgate, as Wenger would find it difficult to balance both Arsenal and England, but it might just fall into his place.

Though his name’s gradually become a punchline for Premier League failure over the past few years, Wenger has been an unqualified success at Arsenal. He deserves to be remember among the league’s greatest ever managers, and for all the criticisms levied at his current Arsenal side, they haven’t finished outside the top four since 1995-96.

That’s a huge achievement, even if they always seem to fall short in their quest for championship glory. Though he’s never managed at international level, Wenger is a master tactician whose Arsenal sides have always played eye-catching football. He’s a strong personality who rarely compromises on his values as a manager, and his sleek, fluid teams couldn’t be further removed from Allardyce’s primitive, hammer-throwing style.

Besides, if the FA appointed Arsene Wenger, all those horrendous memes about his transfer policy would suddenly disappear from your Facebook feed. That’s gotta be worth something, right?
