Ranking Sunderland's Premier League Managers As Players - Worst To Best
7. Mick McCarthy
Mick McCarthy's Premier League tenure with Sunderland was largely farcical, yet he still remains a fairly popular figure on Wearside for his tremendous Championship promotion campaign. But long before arriving at the Stadium of Light, and the Republic of Ireland and Millwall before that, he enjoyed a career as a tall, reputable defender, making 57 appearances for his country. His first club Barnsley was where he saw most of the action, with 272 games under his belt before making 140 appearances for Manchester City. He moved onto Celtic where he won the Scottish Premier League and consecutive Scottish Cups.
