Spurs Transfers: 5 Southampton Players Mauricio Pochettino Should Sign For Tottenham

5. James Ward-Prowse

Having joined Southampton at the age of 8, James Ward-Prowse has gone on to become a key part of the club€™s first team squad. His success with the Saints has also seen him gain recognition on the international stage, with the 19-year-old earning 10 caps for England€™s under-21 side. Ward-Prowse made his senior debut for Southampton at the age of 16 in the League Cup against Crystal Palace. On his next appearance he opened his account for the club and by the end of the season he had signed his first professional contract. Signing at the same time as him were fellow academy graduates Luke Shaw and Calum Chambers. With the Saints now in the Premier League it was thought that Ward-Prowse may go on loan to gain experience. However, he remained at the club and produced some brilliant performances, with his showing against Manchester City drawing special praise. An impressive first top-flight season for Ward-Prowse was rounded off by winning Southampton€™s Scholar of the Year award for 2012/13, pipping Luke Shaw to the trophy. Last season marked Ward-Prowse€™s true breakthrough into the first team. Under Pochettino he made 34 league appearances and the midfielder recently spoke about how he did not want the Argentine to leave St. Mary€™s. Such a bond with the manager makes Ward-Prowse an obvious target for the new Tottenham boss. Still only 19-years-old, Ward-Prowse has bags of potential and would suit the style of play likely to be implemented at White Hart Lane.
