Steve McClaren will receive £50 million worth of new talent for his Newcastle United squad with the first potential arrival already identified as Queens Park Rangers' Charlie Austin, according to the Shields Gazette. The plans for McClaren's new-look United come after the former England manager signed a three year deal with the option for a further five years yesterday. And in what is still a bit of a shock move, he was also appointed to a new look board of directors alongside managing director Lee Charnley, chief scout Graham Carr and club ambassador Bob Moncur. The 54-year-old, who starts work at the club today, will be told by Charnley and Carr the plans the pair have for the transfer window which officially swung wide open yesterday. The Austin link comes about because United's strike force needs some serious surgery after a pretty baron campaign. Ayoze Perez will be a really good player, there's no doubting that, but his return of seven league goals from 36 appearances shows he can't be the main man just get. Papiss Cisse celebrated his 30th birthday last week (and we know the policy on players that hit the big 3-0) while Emmanuel Riviere looks to be a lost cause when it comes to Premier League quality fire power. On top of The Magpies' need for more fire power, Steve McClaren actually worked with the recent England call-up at Loftus Road for a brief spell before taking charge at Derby County. Hopefully that will play a part in any decision the 18-goal hitman makes on his future in the coming weeks.
