Sunderland Next Manager: 5 Candidates To Replace Paolo Di Canio

3. Roberto Di Matteo

Roberto Di Matteo Roberto Di Matteo is another candidate of whose CV stands out more than most other applicants. The former Chelsea boss won the FA Cup and the Champions League during his brief and occasionally tumultuous stint at Stamford Bridge, but was still sacked after just eight months in charge. When it comes to looking for a replacement for Paolo Di Canio, you'd be hard-pressed to find many more who can say they've lifted the Champions League. Di Matteo also has experience in working at lower levels of the game, having won automatic promotion to the Premier League with West Brom in only his first season in charge in 2009-10 after almost guiding MK Dons out of League One. The likable Italian oversaw the best start to a Premier League season by West Brom during his second season in charge, and was also named Manager of the Month for September 2010. A job, and silverware, at Chelsea followed off the back of these successes, but he was ruthlessly axed by oligarch owner Roman Abramovich and hasn't managed since.
