UFC 175 Results: 10 Lessons We Learned

8. Dana White Is Insanely Protective Of Ronda Rousey

Reed Saxon/AP/Press Association ImagesReed Saxon/AP/Press Association ImagesAfter her match with Alexis Davis was over (and oh-so brief it was, but we'll get to that in a bit), Joe Rogan did his usual interview in the octagon. Rousey was in high spirits. Rogan, however, threw out one question that, while it wasn't exactly unexpected, still came as a bit of a surprise: He asked her if she would fight again in a month at UFC 176 to save the event. Now, I want to make two things clear: One, Rogan stated outright that "the guys in the truck" (the production truck) fed him the question. They were making him ask it. Two, Rousey had already been asked this very question leading up to UFC 175, and had said that if asked, she probably would fight again. Last night, however, two things happened: One, Rousey mentioned requiring knee surgery, though she said she would fight if she was really needed. Two, Dana White lost his shit. White looked absolutely furious with Rogan and could be seen mouthing something along the lines of "that was the dumbest fucking question ever" - or close to it. The thing is, it wasn't a dumb question. It was a legit question given the circumstances, how quick she finished the fight, and the fact that it had already come up. Thing is, White wants full control of everything Rousey. She's the star that changed his mind about women's MMA - not because he had a huge change of heart about women fighting, but because he saw the chance to make a lot of money promoting a bona fide superstar with crossover appeal. Questions like this worry White, because there's always a chance that Rousey could walk away, and head off to the movies. He wants to protect his investment, basically. It's understandable, but a bit much.
