7. Lyoto Machida Needs To Stop Playing It Safe

John Locher/AP/Press Association ImagesJohn Locher/AP/Press Association ImagesLyoto Machida put up a good fight against Chris Weidman - in the later rounds, when he came on strong. However, watching the fight with a friend and fellow MMA fan, it was clear to us that Machida wasn't pushing the fight when he needed to, especially early on. Remember Jones vs. Machida? Machida pressed forward in that fight. He was constantly applying pressure. He was still elusive, but his elusiveness was used to find openings and get shots in. Of course, against Jones it cost him - he got caught and choked unconscious, dropping to the mat as the crowd was silenced. That was the Lyoto Machida that needed to show up last night. Unfortunately (and this is in no way to discredit Weidman, who put on a great show), he didn't. Not until it was too late anyway.
