Sunderland are close to signing left back Wayne Bridge who is currently in the North East undergoing a medical ahead of a switch to the Stadium of Light. Sky Sports News reports that the deal would be for a loan switch until the end of the season and would give Bridge a brief respite from the misery he has endured at Manchester City and the chance to impress the Black Cats and try and secure a permanent deal in the summer. The former England defender has been forced to train with Manchester City's reserves after being named surplus to requirements at the club. He has only started one Carling Cup game for City this season. Bridge spent last season on loan at West Ham United during their relegation season and made 18 appearances. There had been much talk of Championship side Reading stealing Bridge but the 31-year old had hoped to stay in the Premier League and Sunderland boss Martin O'Neill look to have granted his wish.
