The Liverpool centre-back lost his chance to compete at the 2014 World Cup after Denmark could only finish second in Group B behind Italy and went out via a technicality. The Danes missed out on a play-off berth despite finishing second, as they had the weakest record of the nine runners-up. They went out with a flourish, however, after flattening Malta 6-0 in Compenhagen in their final group game, with Agger getting his name on the scoresheet with two trademark penalties.
