4. Naruto - Jiraiya
As one of the three Sannin of the Hidden Leaf Village, Jiraiya is one of the most powerful shinobi in the world. As a student of the Third Hokage, apprentice to the toads of Mount Myobouku, and hero of two Great Ninja wars, he has not only great training but also boasts unmatched experience.
With all of Jiraiya's experience, versatility, and ability to activate Sage Mode, it would take a powerful Kage-level shinobi to defeat him; all of this, along with his great wisdom, allows him to defeat three of the Six Paths of Pain and almost completely unravel the mystery behind them in one small fight. Not many could perform as admirably as Jiraiya does.
It then came as a great source of amazement when that very same Jiraiya has one of his entire arms torn off and is brutally murdered by his former student Nagato.
Pervy Sage has given Naruto the love and comfort he has been sorely lacking his entire life; where most would have just ignored him, Jiraiya devotes years of his life to training him. He quickly becomes a fan favorite because of his personality, power, and great compassion. Yet, when faced with such a superior foe as Pain, he is nothing but an ant.
