10 Anime That Have No Right To Be This Good
3. Kaguya-Sama: Love Is War
A high school romance based in a school council? Yeah, that sounds average at best. But, you sprinkle in a unique concept like romantic battle mechanics and, hey presto, you've got yourself a modern classic.
Kaguya-Sama: Love Is War seems like your typical anime romance on paper, as it shows two students dancing around their feelings for each other. But, rather than getting off the train at that stop, the show keeps riding it by turning the whole thing into a full-on war.
You see, whoever confesses their love first loses, and so to win, the ice-queen Kaguya and the prodigy student Shirogane must use tactics, seedy methods and wits to coerce the other into confessing first. This takes the mundane setting and turns Kaguya-Sama into one of the most visually/narratively extravagant anime ever produced. There are times when it gets so intense you'd think you were watching Death Note.
While these "battle" mechanics mellow out eventually, the show never lets up on the over-the-top energy, pouring so much into even tiny moments to make them feel bombastic and exciting. One example of this is the rap scene in season three, which could have easily been simple but went above and beyond to be as wild and fun as possible.
The show has NO need to go this hard, but it constantly does!
