The relationship between Oliver Queen and Slade Wilson was one of Arrow’s most complex and saw the pair evolving from situational allies to friends to bitter enemies before ultimately reconciling.
Before patching things up, the two men came head-to-head in Arrow’s sophomore season and their long-standing rivalry was a cause of great personal pain to Oliver due to actions such as Slade murdering the former's mother, Moira and endangering Starling City through the use of Mirakuru-empowered soldiers.
Their fight in the season finale was emotionally charged as it was also juxtaposed with their initial fallout nearly seven years earlier. Watching the combatants exchange blows is impressive due to the performances and fight choreography but was also emotionally heart-wrenching as audiences get to see the further breakdown of the pair's relationship.
Even though Oliver came out on top, it is at great personal cost due to the earlier losses he incurred at the hands of Slade. Fortunately, Slade is redeemed and once again becomes an ally in later seasons, proving that Oliver's choice to spare him was not in vain.
