1. Whenever You're Ready - Series 4 Finale

The Good Place Bad Place Rhonda, Diana, Jake, And Trent
NBC

There were fears that the final season of The Good Place was going to end with a whimper rather than a bang, with the preceding episodes to the finale playing out a little predictably. So it was with pleasant surprise that the finale didn't just wrap things up nicely, but actually boldly took the show in a new direction entirely.

While the humour is still present, the concentration on the show's philosophical aspects and its impact on each of the characters makes for the most heart wrenching and rewarding moments of the show. The idea that an eternally happy afterlife is just not possible is a sombre one, but is addressed with all the creativity and humour that was the show's staple.

Jason's oblivious transition to a monk and Tahani's training in the ultimate planning role are fitting finales to their respective journeys. The final 'break up' for Chidi and Eleanor is truly heartwrenching and somewhat unexpected, but very much fits with the deeper themes of the episode and show as a whole.

But the heartbreak suffered here is made up by the upbeat finale for Michael, who finally gets his wish of being human. The moment when he finally receives his own rewards card was enough to keep a smile on this writer's face for the next bearimy or two.
