10 Best Episodes Of True Detective
6. Omega Station
The final episode of season two. Frank and Jordan Seymon have a getaway planned with Velcoro and Bezzadires, whom are now romantically involved, and all have tickets booked for Venezuela where they will escape the blame for the Caspere murder and the botched investigation.
Writer Nic Pizzolatto must be a big fan of Michaels Mann's Heat, the influences are everywhere. As Velcoro speeds down the motorway to meet Bezzadires and make his getaway, his thoughts are on his son. Instead of making the planned rendezvous, he decides to say goodbye, one last time.
As Robert De Niro’s character Neil MacCauley (Heat) could have told him, stick to the plan or all will be undone. Velcoro is spotted at his son’s school by hit men and flees to the Redwood forests, perused by the corrupt Lieutenant Burris where he is ultimately killed in a tense shootout.
Poor old Frank doesn’t fair too well either. He is picked up by a disgruntled Mexican drug gang and driven to the dessert where he is robbed, stabbed and left for dead. Ray and Frank have laid their demons to rest and their loved ones are free and safe. It’s a happy ending, of sorts, the lesson being, live by the sword, die by the sword.
It’s a fitting demise for the two leads in a drama that focuses mainly on the inescapability of our inner demons; every bad thing you ever did will come back to haunt you, eventually.
