When you ask people, what is the greatest film of all time? The answer you will get most frequently is Star Wars. Ask them, what is the greatest album of all time? Abbey Road by the Beetles. If you ask your average anime fan, what is the greatest anime series of all time? They will most likely give you one of two answers, Full Metal Alchemist or Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood.

While it will eventually come down to personal preference, the difference between the two shows is simple. Full Metal Alchemist aired before the Manga had come to an end, so at some point, it diverges from the source material. Brotherhood, on the other hand, is a complete adaptation of Hiromu Arakawa's masterpiece.

The show is ostensibly the story of the Elric brothers and their quest to reclaim their humanity after they use alchemy, magic with a scientific bent, to bring their mother back from the dead. The show is a beautiful blend of humour, action, intrigue and horror. Their quest takes the brothers, through a world governed by a corrupt military while being hunted by god-like creatures that embody the seven deadly sins.
