8. Rose Tyler Returns... Well, Sort Of!

The 50th anniversary special The Day of the Doctor featured the returns of various friends and foes from the Doctor's past but it was the inclusion of a certain Billie Piper which sparked some of the most fevered speculation amongst the fans in the build up to its premiere. When Billie's comeback was announced (alongside David Tennant's, but more on him later!) on 30th March 2013, everybody seemed to be talking about how the shop girl turned Earth Defender would be written back into the mythology of the Whoniverse. After all, the last time we saw Rose Tyler, in the Series 4 finale Journey's End (2008)*, she was preparing to settle down in her new life on a parallel world with a half human/half Time Lord meta-crisis of her beloved Tenth Doctor. If that premise alone isn't enough to vouch for the fact that quite literally anything can happen in the world of Doctor Who, it eventually transpired that she wasn't Rose Tyler at all, but a mere holographic projection taken on by the most powerful and dangerous weapon in all of creation, the Moment. Well, this was a Steven Moffat script after all... * Excluding her short but sweet appearance in The End of Time (2009). Blimey, she just cannot keep away can she!?
