9. The Twelfth Doctor Is Revealed
With our minds left to furiously ponder questions of secret past Doctors, we were given a glimpse into the future in the summer of 2013 when the Twelfth (or is it the thirteenth?) Doctor was revealed in a special programme which was broadcast live to the world. After weeks of intense press speculation, which saw names such as Rory Kinnear, Daniel Rigby and Idris Elba enter the running for the titular role, all bets were finally off on 5th August as host Zoe Ball welcomed Scottish-born star Peter Capaldi to the stage. What followed was the inevitable flurry of reaction as a record-breaking 542,000 tweets were posted in the immediate aftermath of the actors unveiling. With a peak of 22,000 tweets per minute, it became the highest rated TV related peak of 2013, with some 7 million viewers watching the action unfold in the UK and over 1 million fans tuning in internationally. "Doctor Who is still with us because of every single viewer whos taken it to their hearts," Peter enthused in his first interview as the new Doctor. "It belongs to all of us. He had us at "hello".
