7. Neal Brennan - 3 Mics

Neal Brennan isn't exactly a household name, but most of you will be familiar with his work because he was Dave Chappelle's writing partner on Chappelle's show as well as the co-writer for the film Half Baked and a number of TV shows over the years. Eventually he decided he was done with writing and wanted to do stand up, but he couldn't just jump into it. He had to do the same as any up and comer (read: crappy open mics for about three years). He addresses this in 3 Mics, feeling as though he did everything backwards.

3 Mics is an astounding first time special for the simple fact that Brennan wasn't content with doing garden variety stand up. Instead he applied his history in screenwriting - writing of any kind gives you something of an over analytical mind - and deconstructs what he sees as the three key elements in almost every single stand up special: one liners, polished stand up, and personal introspection. Then delivers all three separately.

You'd be forgiven for assuming that this intentional deconstruction of the medium would mean Brennan plans to mock the formulaic nature of comedy, but instead it's a love letter to all things comedy and everything that makes it wonderful.

Johnny sat by the fire, idly swirling his brandy, flicking through the pages of War and Peace, wondering whether it was pretentious to write his bio in the third person.
