10 Best New Cartoons Of The Decade
8. Disenchantment
Disenchantment is the worst show Matt Groening has ever made. That’s a criticism which often gets chucked about whenever Disenchantment is on, but once you realise his other two shows are The Simpsons and Futurama, it stings a lot less.
Yes, it would be great if Disenchantment hit their heights, but that’s a monstrously unfair expectation to place on a show, especially after we’ve only had one season (albeit in two parts). Besides, Disenchantment isn’t trying to be like those two anyway. Rather than an episodic, watch in any order laugh-fest, Disenchantment is a serial fantasy epic. There’s jokes, sure, but narrative takes precedent.
Going into Chapter Two, there’s a lot of intriguing mythology to unfold, but most interesting by far is Steamland. A pseudo Victorian, steampunk style society, it shows that Disenchantment is much bigger than Dreamland itself, and instead takes part in a fantastical world of separate, largely inaccessible regions.
A demon, an elf and a princess walk into a bar, and one of the decade’s best cartoons walks out. Here’s hoping they can keep their momentum going into the 2020s.
