10 Best New Cartoons Of The Decade
2. BoJack Horseman
BoJack got off to a shaky start, but it’s grown to become one of the most artful, complex and heartbreaking shows on television. Due to finish in January 2020, it likely won’t go out on a high from a character perspective, but it’s certainly bowing out while the going’s good.
The first season kind of trundles along a bit. There’s some laughs, and it’s a little silly but still edgy, though it’s clear it doesn’t really know what it is. Then Downer Ending hits.
When BoJack needs Diane to ‘tell him he’s a good person’ at the end of the penultimate episode, it discovers what it’s supposed to be. BoJack Horseman is a truly raw show, one unrivalled for its willingness to put its characters through the wringer while still goofing off.
The show has tackled alcoholism, drug abuse, suicide, sexuality, abortion, fracking, #MeToo, rehab, depression and loneliness seamlessly. While it has to settle for second here, its more experimental episodes - Free Churro, Fish Out Of Water, Time’s Arrow - all stake claims as the best of the decade.
All this talk of how deep and meaningful BoJack can be shouldn’t take away from the fact it’s hilarious too, with lightning quick wit.
