This year also saw the live action adaptation of Gerrard Way’s iconic comic series Umbrella Academy and anything written by the Savior of the Broken, the Beaten and the Damned, usually turns to magic. The showrunners did their source material full justice in this dark, heart stopping tale of a dysfunctional family of superheroes.

The premise of the show is based on the birth of a number of children who have special powers. Then, billionaire Sir Reginald Hargreeves shows up to adopt, or buy, some of these children to form his own Superhero team-up. Thus the Umbrella Academy is born.

However the story isn’t about them learning to fight crime. Rather it is about the people behind the masks as they struggle to keep their lives together following the end of their crime fighting days. Some become rich and famous, others struggle to get by. One disappears to the moon, while another to the future.

The latter becomes the center point of the plot as he returns to warn the rest of an impending apocalypse, and a shadowy organization with powers over time itself. In the end, all of it comes down to Vanya Hargreeves, previously the neglected child of the family with no powers.

As it turns out, the truth was the opposite; she had too much power. A thrilling final sequence ensues with the other siblings desperately trying to stop the world from ending while also deciding to try and save their sister.
