8. Tara Knowles
Tara was one of the most important aspects of Sons of Anarchy, and had the biggest influence on Jax throughout the series. Even more so than Gemma, or the memory and legacy of JT. It was Tara and his boys that were the reason Jax wanted to leave Charming, and when it finally seemed on the horizon, Tara was brutally murdered.
When Gemma wrongfully believed that Tara had made a deal to take Thomas and Abel out of Charming, she snapped, killing her daughter-in-law in one of the most brutal ways the show had ever seen. And that is really saying something.
The mother of Gemma's grandkids was part-way drowned in the kitchen sink, before being stabbed numerous times in the back of the neck. The nature and aggression of the attack was so severe that Jax and the rest of the Sons had no trouble believing that it was gang retaliation from Henry Lin's crew.
Tara's death was one of the most shocking moments of Sons of Anarchy, and directly resulted in the war between the Sons and Lin that spanned the majority of the show's explosive final season.
