Star Trek Barash
CBS Media Ventures

In Star Trek: The Next Generation, the fourth season episode introduced the audience to Barash. This lonely alien was the last survivor of his race, living on a planet that he could use as his own holodeck, thanks to the ingenuity of his mother.

The Romulan Empire had destroyed his civilisation, though they had been unable to find him. Therefore, in the fantasy that he plays out with Will Riker, the Romulans are the villains who are pulling all the strings - all while his 'Dad' tries to figure out what is going wrong.

While Barash himself only appears for a few brief moments, he was an example of a truly alien appearance, in a show where many of the cultures that the Federation encounter are humanoid with face make-up. Barash was a reminder that, out there in space, there was a lot more than simply bald or growling aliens, glowering at a viewscreen.
