6. Omar Little - The Wire

Pretty much every character in David Simon's drama The Wire can be classified as an "antihero," from the detectives on the frontline of the War on Drugs to the Baltimore locals whose lives are almost irreversibly changed by the conflict.

But none are as memorable and complicated as stick-up man Omar Little, who spends the series robbing street-level drug dealers, undermining the power of the city's most dangerous gangs, and making a name for himself thanks to his strict moral code, trench coat, and hidden shotgun.

Often described as the show's version of Robin Hood, Omar understood the importance of wealth distribution and just how dangerous and hypocritical the War on Drugs was at its core.

Omar Little was an empathetic character whose open homosexuality and compassionate persona made him a fan favourite who pushed against criminal stereotypes and seemed, deep down, to be a good man lost to a life he could never escape.

He may have been a murderer, but the tragedy of his life and the performance of Michael K. Williams made him an easy figure to get behind.
