10 Big Finish Doctor Who Moments We Wish We Saw On-Screen
2. The Sixth Doctor’s Regeneration
Sadly, due to behind the scenes issues at the time, Colin Baker never got a true regeneration story. That was until, 'The Sixth Doctor - The Last Adventure', where Colin Baker was given a phenomenal story to end his incarnations journeys on.
Yes, we technically did see the Sixth Doctor regenerate in ‘Time and the Rani’, as the body is turned over, the energy glows from his face and the Seventh Doctor arrives. But there is so much more to it to that. The Sixth Doctor has developed into such a character, and some profound final words is something most important to any Doctor, but especially Colin Baker’s, as the incarnation has been shown to have such a way with them.
‘The Last Adventure’ gave the Sixth Doctor a genuine reason for regenerating. In an effort to stop the Valeyard, the Sixth Doctor manipulates his past self to the planet Lakertya (from ‘Time and the Rani’), where he’ll sacrifice himself in order to regenerate, which would stop the Valeyard’s scheme.
On screen, technically, the Sixth Doctor’s final words are “carrot juice, carrot juice, carrot juice” at the end of ‘Trial of a Time Lord’. However, the 'Last Adventure’ leaves the Sixth Doctor bowing out with the finale words of: “Change, I feel it. Yes. I will regenerate. Our future is in safe hands.”, said alongside his future incarnation.
To see this whole adventure on-screen would be a treat for fans, giving Colin Baker the ending he deserved. Covering such a scope of the Sixth Doctor’s timeline, the story is so full of on-screen potential. As well as stand out moments such as the Doctor confronting the Valeyard in the Matrix, similar to how the original draft of ‘Trial of a Time Lord’ was supposed to end. But to specifically see the moment causing the Sixth Doctor's regeneration is a treat fans sadly missed out on.
