8. The Romulans Split From The Vulcans Because Of An Ancient Android

Bridging plot hooks from the classic Original Series episode What Are Little Girls Made Of and the recent Star Trek Picard series, it appears that a race of truly ancient synthetic beings once lived in this galaxy and attempted to control it. When Captain Kirk and Nurse Chapel go to Exo-III to look for Dr. Roger Korby, they find that Korby is deep underground in a series of tunnels, left behind by a race only identified as 'The Old Ones'.

They encounter Ruk, an android that was left behind by these Old Ones, as well as a girl called Andrea. Andrea is an android that was created by Korby, since he has found the manufacturing plant for the ancient androids and is going to use them to infiltrate the rest of the galaxy. So what does this have to do with the Vulcan/Romulan Divide?

During this episode, Korby (who himself is revealed to be an android replacement of the original Korby) creates a replicant of Kirk, demonstrating that these machines can take any form. Ruk explains that the androids rebelled against their organic creators because they were disorderly and did not value logic. So after some time, perhaps these androids decided that all of the organic life that was developing around them needed guidance.

They needed order and logic.

On Vulcan, the teachings of Surak led the violent and emotional Vulcan people to a new age of logic and reason. But at around this time, a great divide occurred amongst their people. Perhaps a small group had discovered that Surak was in fact an ancient android, sent to manipulate the Vulcan people into a more peaceful state. Perhaps this small group called themselves the Zhat Vash and they led an exodus from their homeworld when they saw that they could not win against Surak's followers. Perhaps the Zhat Vash are the only ones who truly know why the divide happened in the first place and dedicated themselves to guarding against these machines and all who have followed in their footsteps.

If Surak was an ancient android, then what other races have been quietly manipulated in their distant pasts by these machines?

This fan theory originated with the Youtube channel 'Star Trek Theory', which has loads of other great videos and ideas.

Still bitter that Star Trek Enterprise got canned and almost old enough to angrily tell the kids to 'Get Off My Lawn!'
