Spike's introduction is one of the most memorable in all of the Buffyverse. He slams his car through the Welcome to Sunnydale sign, symbollically smashing away everything that had come before him. One such thing that had come before was the Master and the Order of Aurelius.

With the death of the Master (and the failed resurrection), The Annointed One was left in charge of the Order. Spike pretended to play nice with him, joining their cult in an attempt to gain a foothold in Sunnydale. He arrived at the perfect time - just on the eve of the Festival of St. Vigeous.

This is described as an annual event when Vampires are at their most powerful, creating havoc and terror in the hearts of humans in a single night of horrific bloodshed. Spike, in a way that the audience would come to get very used to, ruins that year's festival by attempting to take on Buffy before he truly understood the situation around him.

While the episode ends with Spike firmly establishing himself as the new player in town, burning the Annointed One to dust, the Festival of St. Vigeous is never mentioned again. Considering the show is called 'Buffy The VAMPIRE Slayer', a huge, annual event where Vampires are at their most powerful seems like it should have been slightly more of an issue for Sunnydale than it proved to be!
