9. Benjen Stark
Benjen Stark was one of the running mysteries of the series, as his brief introduction in the first episode, and subsequent disappearance off the face of the earth, left many fans wanting to know what happened to the Stark brother. Eventually, they would get their answer, but it was over so briefly that it might have been better left to the imagination.
In season six, Benjen spontaneously reappeared, and came to the aide of Bran and Meera. It was revealed that Benjen had been pierced by a White Walker blade, but was saved by the Children of the Forrest who placed a shard of dragonglass in his chest. However, almost as soon as he returned to the show, he was gone again. But while his time in the sixth season was brief, it was nothing compared to the next.
In the seventh season, viewers were given a tense moment as an isolated Jon Snow found himself surrounded by wights. Thankfully, Benjen randomly appeared - he is good at that - just in the nick of time, and fought them off, saving Jon but being swarmed and killed in the process.
There was so much more that could have been done with this character, but he was killed off before he got the chance to resonate with fans.
