5. Stannis Baratheon
In the early days of the show, there were many contenders for the Iron Throne, with the main competitors for Robert's position being Daenerys, Renly and, of course, Stannis. In the minds of many fans, Stannis Baratheon was the rightful king, thanks to the line of succession and the infidelity of the king's wife, but sadly he did not come close to wearing the crown.
Stannis's time in season five was spent mostly in the North, after he aligned himself with Jon Snow and battled against the ruthless Ramsey Bolton. But, this came to a tragic end after his army was devastated and he was left lying out against a tree. Brienne of Tarth promptly arrived to deliver the killing blow, and he was unceremoniously cut from the series.
The very same outing would see the tragic - if temporary - demise of Jon Snow, which of course needed to be prioritised, but leaving Stannis as a seemingly irrelevant character in the placement of the episode utterly ruined the importance of his position. This character not only deserved to live longer, but he also should have had his death as an episode climax, seeing as he was one of the major driving forces in the series.
