8. Sports Night
The show Aaron Sorkin created and ran prior to his West Wing behemoth, Sports Night features many of the same hallmarks familiar to anyone who follows Sorkin’s work. Whip smart dialogue spoken at speed by talented, noble characters inhabiting a shared work space.
In this case, a late night cable sports news show anchored by Josh Charles and Peter Krause, overseen by producer Felicity Huffman. After a battle to get the network to drop a truly needless laugh track from the first few episodes, Aaron’s writing took in many major stories that seem eerily prescient before social media amplified the news; there were tales of locker room abuse of female reporters, players taking a stand against the confederate
flag, the legalisation of marijuana and media manipulation. The show did get a second season, but struggled to find an audience before ending. Still, at least Sorkin got to spend time at the White House.
