10 Dark British Comedy TV Shows That Must Be Seen

8. Bottom

Bd8 Irreverent humour at its finest, Bottom stars comedy duo Rik Mayall and Adrian Edmondson as a pair of flatmates on the dole in London. The humour is nihilistic and chaotic, with slapstick playing a large role in the proceedings. It's considered to be the most violent Britcom of all time with chainsaw amputations and cutlery impalement commonplace in Richie and Eddie's filthy little flat. As for an overarching narrative, there is very little past the pair of them trying to get laid and injuring each other. Everything else that occurs around this is a blur of angry movement; it's certainly the most energetic black comedy on this list. Running for three seasons and spawning both a feature film and a play, Bottom was certainly well received by those who bought into its cartoonish madness. Mayall and Edmondson say they came up with the idea while co-starring in a West End version of Samuel Beckett's Waiting For Godot, stating that they wanting to make a cruder version of similar plays. I can happily confirm that they succeeded where crudeness is concerned.
