10 Depressing Truths Bojack Horseman Will Teach You
3. Just Because Someone Is Important To You, Doesn't Mean They Have To Stay
When you care about someone, you feel like you can confide in them. Sharing intimacies with another is a big part of what makes relationships work. You cannot merely exist with a person and not share some troublesome things about yourself if you want to maintain trust. Friendships and connections are give and take, and often you have to know when to help and when to hurt consciously.
One of the issues with Bojack is his selfish approach to this very thing. He often does not allow breathing room for his friends, continually laying his problems at their doorstep and looking to them to make him feel better. He clearly feels safe doing this because he genuinely cares about these people and believes that they will stick with him.
One of the most potent lines in the series is when Diane is concerned about moving to Chicago because she doesn't want to leave Bojack, and he says something akin to, "that doesn't sound like a friendship it sounds like a hostage situation."
Ultimately the ending between Diane and Bojack shows that you cannot expect someone to stay in your life just because they mean a lot to you.
