One of the reasons the aforementioned The Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone were the first episodes Matt Smith and Karen Gillan filmed was so that Alex Kingston could be there as a supportive figure for them, as she already had experience working on the show.

One of the first scenes that Smith and Kingston filmed together was the opening moment where River flies through space and lands on top of the Doctor in the TARDIS. According to an interview with Doctor Who Confidential, it wasn't actually scripted that she land on top of him. It was, in fact, Smith's idea - an idea that he might have come to regret when filming actually began.

That's because this stunt wasn't as easy to pull off as they originally thought, and resulted in multiple takes where Kingston's knee would end up in some very uncomfortable places for poor Matt Smith, and the pair would burst into fits of giggles.

Let it just be remembered that, at this point, these two actors barely knew each other. But it's probably safe to assume that after the fun (and pain) of filming this scene, they developed a much closer bond!

Sometimes you hear my voice, sometimes you see my face and sometimes you read my words! But I’m usually away with the faeries and timelords! ?‍♀️

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
