10 Doctor Who Comic Book Characters Who Should Appear In The Show
3. Frobisher
Many fans have wondered why DWM's shapeshifting, anthropomorphic alien penguin 'Frobisher' hasn't made it into the TV show, or the mainstream. This is an excellent question.
A Whifferdill from the planet Xenon, Frobisher was introduced as a companion to the Sixth Doctor in 1984. Taking a break on TV, DWM writers wanted to shake up the source material and give readers something imaginative, outlandish, and iconic. A con-man, and later a private detective in a penguin disguise, Frobisher was initially hired to capture the Doctor. Shapeshifting his way into the TARDIS, Frobisher had a change of heart and helped the Doctor escape after hitting it off with him.
After a series of madcap adventures, Frobisher contracted mono-morphia which trapped him in his penguin form. Fast-talking his way into other misadventures, a solo career, and even helping to fix the TARDIS when it went on strike, Frobisher has been one of Doctor Who comics' most consistent characters.
Frobisher was eventually cured of mono-morphia and left the TARDIS. Later, whilst in human form as a bartender called 'Bish', he encountered a despondent Eighth Doctor. Since they had both changed considerably since their travels, neither realised who the other was, but Frobisher still managed to prescribe the Doctor some hope and optimism.
Frobisher has also appeared in the audio adventures, sounding somewhat like Paul Simon, and has acquired an impressive fanbase. The Doctor dropping in on their old pal in an episode would be iconic and long overdue, and would perhaps return the series to its more imaginative, abstract routes.
Galactic Rating: No relation to Peter Capaldi in Torchwood.
