RTD may have debunked rumours that the new series of Doctor Who will have a budget of £10 million per episode, but fans will still be hoping for a cash injection for a show that has often been accused of looking cheap.

That said, there have been plenty of stories over the years that have splashed a bit more cash than usual, such as 1986's The Mysterious Planet.

For this first part of the ambitious, series-long story Trial of a Time Lord, producer John Nathan-Turner wanted to impress viewers by making the show look as good as possible, since this was the first thing broadcast after its 1985 hiatus.

So, he ordered a truly spectacular shot of the TARDIS being pulled into the Time Lord space station. This was the first time that a motion-controlled camera had been used on Doctor Who, and an intricate six-foot wide model of the station was built solely for this scene.

This single, minute-long shot cost a massive £8,000, making it the most expensive sequence in Doctor Who up to that point.

It still holds up incredibly well today, but it does also make the rest of the series feel quite cheap by comparison.
