10 Doctor Who Mistakes You Can NEVER Unsee

5. Magic Whistle (The Empty Child)

Lots of characters in the Doctor Who universe have special powers, from aliens that can shapeshift, to the Time Lords being able to survive death by regenerating.

But those are nothing compared to the insane skills displayed by Nancy in Series 1's The Empty Child, who, apparently, can finger whistle... while wearing gloves.

Ten minutes into the episode, Nancy is seen raiding a stranger's house, searching its cupboards for food. While doing so, she finds a home-cooked meal that's been left on the table, but rather than scoffing it down herself, she heads outside and performs a loud finger whistle, informing the local homeless children that she's found some grub for them to eat.

It's not immediately noticeable due to how darkly the scene is lit, but upon closer inspection, you can clearly see that Nancy is still wearing her gloves when she performs the finger whistle - which would obviously make it impossible.

This one's definitely easier to make out in motion, and no, the gloves are not fingerless. Nancy is just ridiculously talented, we guess.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
