10 Doctor Who Storylines That Were Suddenly Abandoned
10. What Happened To The Master After Frontier In Space?
The simple answer is that the brilliant Roger Delgado died in a car crash before he could return to the show to film his last story The Final Game. This would have seen the battle between the Doctor and Master come to a dramatic and final end. In many ways, the show took the most appropriate route and moved on to other stories, leaving his alliance with the Daleks in the closing moments of Frontier In Space his last evil action against the Doctor. You also have to consider who the producers could cast in the role of the Master after the sheer impact of Delgado's performance. Though that argument could have been used for William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton etc and look how well that turned out. From a narrative point, the sudden disappearance of the Master after Frontier In Space doesn't make much sense. The Master had been such a strong presence in the Doctor's life since his debut in Terror Of The Autons - appearing in every episode of series eight and many more since - that the failure to explain what happened to him opens the same questions as what would happen if the Brigadier or Jo Grant vanished at this point in the show's history. There would be a resolution of sorts in Tom Baker's The Deadly Assassin but audiences never found out what happened to transform the Master into the revenge-driven Skeletal monster he became.
